Wizz-e online book review & giveaway

Sunday, February 7, 2010
Reading is a huge part of my life and I have always encouraged both of my children to read, read, read whenever they have the chance! I also love letting them spend time on the computer but often worry that it's wasted time. When I learned of the online children's book publisher Wizz-e I couldn't help but wish it had been around when my children were small. Wizz-e's mission statement is "bringing the magic of books to life" and it's something that I believe they're doing a great job at! The reading choices include award winning virtual books such as "Hoop-La the Hippo" books to tell time, "What Time Is It?", help with math skills, "Simple Math - addition to 10" and even ones that deal with life events. The books can be viewed online or downloaded to your computer for access anytime. Once you purchase a title, it's yours forever!

Though my 9 year old is a bit old for this site I still wanted to see what she thought. Pie read through a couple of books and a definite favorite was "When I don't want to sleep". She said that she really liked how the pictures on the pages moved and the voices were silly and fun. She also liked that she could either have the whole book read to her, stop it and read herself or click on the words and read along. Pie had fun doing the quizzes at the end and was excited when she aced them :) My little student loves to win! She thought Wizz-e was something her little cousin would really have fun with and I agree!

As a mom I loved that the books are so interactive. The pages are bright and colorful, the imagery is age appropriate and whimsical. The ebook interface is just simple enough for little minds to grasp, yet interactive enough for the older age range to still enjoy. I like that it quizzes the reader's comprehension at the end in a fun way. I recommend Wizz-e if you're looking for fun, educational activities for your child to do on the computer.

Tookie Trinkets Etsy shop feature & giveaway

I'm so pleased to introduce the Tookie Trinkets Etsy Shop to you as today's Featured Seller! Jenny from Tookie Trinkets was one of my very first blog friends! She has a shop full of creative jewelry, crocheted accessories and trinkets!

How did you choose your shop name?
My shop name is Tookie Trinkets. Tookie is a nick name my grandmother had for me. She was a large collector of costume and fine jewelry. I started making jewelry for myself by taking apart some of her jewelry pieces, that I had inherited, and putting them together along with new beads and findings to make something new and interesting. I chose the word Trinkets because jewelry is just a trinket in the real scope of life's important things. The reason behind why I am selling my creations is lasting however. I am working towards bringing awareness to the crime of human trafficking and a portion of all of my sales go towards helping rescue women and children off the streets and out of a life of slavery. Check out my blog - tookietrinkets.blogspot.com for more info on human trafficking.

When and why did you open your Esty shop?
I opened my shop in December last year. I am hoping that Etsy will be a place where I can sell a few of my creations. The more I sell, the more I can donate to organizations that fight human trafficking. I also enjoy buying things from Etsy and viewing the many, many fun and creative handmade products available to people, so I thought....well, why not try to sell some of my handmade things on Etsy.

Who or What inspires you to create?
So many things inspire me. All of creation is a constant source of color and shape that give me a creative spark. Sometimes it's an idea or a feeling that is fun, thoughtful, or romantic. Natural items inspire me. I love using the metals and stones of the earth and assembling them to make something that will give pleasure and beauty to someone else.

Is this your full time job? If not, what's you day job?
I work as a part time Children's Librarian in a small community. I enjoy doing story time, leading a teen group and planning other kid's events to promote reading and the use of the library.

What do you just love making the most? What craft would you like to try next?
I think crochet is actually my favorite craft over jewelry making. There is something so soothing and comforting about the repetitive motions of crochet. It relaxes me. I really enjoy just putting yarn in hand and coming up with my own patterns for hats/scarves/shawls and blankets. I started doing some altered books at one point and set that aside. I would like to pick that up this next year, just for my own sake and putter at taking some old book pages and giving them new life in the creative process of adding paint, scrap, memorabilia and original art.

How do you spend your time when you're not crafting?
I love to read. I always have several books going at once. Flower gardening is a passion in the summer time and going for long walks, with my chocolate lab Ginger, is something relaxing I enjoy. Blogging has become a part of my life, also. I started about a year and a half ago and have found so many friendly and interesting people to share bits and pieces of life with. I am also a mom to a couple of teenage boys and a wife, so my guys keep me busy too.
